The Bois Forte Band of Chippewa Forest Carbon Project
In June of 2022, the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa, one of eleven Tribal Nations in the state of Minnesota, reclaimed 28,000 acres of land within its traditional reservation boundaries through a purchase that marks the most significant Tribal Nation land return in the United States. As a critical conservation pathway, the Band is working to leverage carbon credits through a partnership with the National Indian Carbon Coalition and enroll 22,000 acres of reacquired forestland into the voluntary carbon market.
The Impact of Nature-Based Climate Solutions
Our client, the National Indian Carbon Coalition, is working hand-in-hand with Tribal National and Indigenous communities. In this video we dive into opportunities to both preserve natural lands and increase access to resources for underrepresented communities. NICC projects support reforestation, improve forest management through education, and support stewardship of native ecosystems while decreasing the effects of invasive species.
Improving Forest Management in Michigan
In August 2020, the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Tribal Council voted to move forward with a carbon development project and enrolled 16,500 acres of tribal forestland in an Improved Forest Management project with the National Indian Carbon Coalition. This short documentary tracks the measurable, positive impacts of carbon project enrollment for the Community. The funds generated by the project are being used to meet KBIC’s environmental vision.
